Having grown up on the Isle of Skye in Scotland, Brìghde Chaimbeul has developed an innovative style of playing the Scottish smallpipes that emphasises rich textural drones and a trance-like constancy of sound. A native Gaelic speaker, her style is rooted in her native language and culture, but draws inspiration from a variety of global piping traditions such as from Cape Breton, Eastern Europe and Ireland. In 2016, Chaimbeul was the winner of the BBC Radio 2 Young Folk award and in 2019 she claimed the BBC Radio 2 Horizon Award. Her debut album ‘The Reeling’ received rave reviews with the Guardian naming it Folk Album of the Month and The Quietus listing it as one of their Albums of the Year.
